What is Internet Safety?

Being safe online is more complex than simply telling children not to give out their names and addresses to strangers and is important for people of all ages. Some examples of Internet Safety topics include:

  • Cyberbullying and online harassment
  • Online gaming
  • Social networking
  • Preventing Identity Theft
  • Inappropriate content
  • Media literacy

The resources collected here can help you understand the many issues that children, parents, and health care providers must manage to keep children and their families healthy.

Internet Safety for Adults

Going online lets you keep learning, connect with friends and family, and play games. Just as you fasten your seat belt before driving, take precautions before using the internet to be safer and more secure. The first step is to STOP. THINK. CONNECT.™: take safety measures, think about the consequences of your actions and connect knowing you have taken steps to safeguard yourself when online. (from National Cyber Security Alliance)

General Information

Identity Theft

Online identity theft is a serious crime, often aimed at obtaining the personal or financial information of another person. The obtained information is then used for personal gain, often by making purchases or selling someone's identity or credit card details online to the highest bidder. (from Pixel Privacy)

Internet Scams

Internet fraud is the use of Internet services or software with Internet access to defraud victims or to otherwise take advantage of them. Internet crime schemes steal millions of dollars each year from victims and continue to plague the Internet through various methods. (from fbi.org)
