Scoping + Systematic Reviews

What is Quality Assessment?

Quality assessment, also known as quality appraisal, critical appraisal, or risk of bias assessment is the step when you examine the quality of the evidence you've included in your review.

Do I Have to Do a Quality Assessment?

The answer for systematic reviews is an absolute YES. You need to review your included studies for both quality and bias.

For scoping reviews it is optional. Generally, scoping reviews only include this step if it makes sense in answering the research question. For example if your question involves describing the state of research on your topic, including an assessment of the quality of that research makes sense.

Tools + Standards for Quality Assessment

You will want to use an established set of standards when assessing the quality of your included studies and standards that match the study design(s) of those included studies.

Here are some commonly used standards.
