CEC 101: What's the IHP's Role in Health Equity?

Deepening Your Understanding of the Intersection of Race and Class

Review the learning materials and then complete the reflection activity.

Learning Materials

1. Sharpening your intersectional analysis - the following materials describe the power structures related to race, class, and health.

2. Health Care Access Cases - choose two cases to read about and use them to respond to the reflection questions.

Suburbs and health care access

Reflection Activity

  • Please select one of the health care access cases that you reviewed. Given the different interacting social structures, you learned about, and the particularities of your selected case, what do you need to keep in mind as a health care professional to provide quality care? Is there additional learning you would want to pursue to understand the challenges that might come up for the scenario you chose?

  • As a member of the IHP community whose mission is “to educate health professionals and researchers to drive innovation in the delivery of equitable and interprofessional care for a diverse and complex society through leadership in education, clinical practice, scholarship, and community engagement,” what do you see as your role in influencing and/or making a healthcare system that effectively cares for the most vulnerable?

  • These readings have focused on health, race, and class, but are there other social categories you think might be important? How and why?
