Deepening Your Understanding of the Intersectionality of Race and Disability

The following readings expand on the information about power systems identified in the first section of this guide to incorporate disability and think about what this particular intersection means in terms of health care. Specifically:

  • Intersection of race, ethnicity, and financial impacts
  • Disabilities as a health disparities population
  • The intersection of racism and ableism

Opportunities for Reflection

Use these questions to help you process the information you learned in the readings.

  1. What did you learn about health as it relates to disability?
  2. What connections do you see between the power systems described in the section "Learning About Power Systems" and these materials?
  3. These readings have focused on health, disability and race, are there other social categories you think might be important? How and why?
  4. How does Power, Privilege, and Positionality impact or matter in health professional education?
