Systematic, Scoping & Other Literature Reviews at Mass General Brigham

Resources for publishing literature reviews and evidence syntheses at Mass General Brigham

Risk of Bias Assessment

Risk of bias (RoB) assessment is a necessary step for any systematic review or meta-analysis. A rapid review will do an abbreviated version of this process.

Risk of bias assessment overlaps with critical appraisal. Critical appraisal is technically different; it’s used to assess the quality of evidence for patient care whereas risk of bias is used to evaluate studies included in published literature reviews. However, some checklists can be used for both purposes.

Our course now offers training for risk of bias. You'll get an overview of the process and we’ll walk through the Cochrane risk of bias tool and show you how to answer each question on it in plain English. You can take these lessons simply to learn more about evaluating the quality of evidence, even if you’re not conducting a literature review.
